Neighborhood Under Siege : Barricade Situation Paralyses Area For Hours : Suspect Resident of West Hollywood

At around 4 p.m. Wednesday, 911 operators received a call about a man at a home in the 600 N. Blk of Edinburgh Avenue threatening harm to himself and possibly other occupants of the property. Persons at the same address were believed to have been the subject of an FBI investigation the day before.

LAPD Wilshire officers were immediately dispatched to the location. It was established that the incident was a particularly serious one and that LAPD divisions like SWAT, the Bomb squad, and thongs of other assets from LAPD divisions all over the city were consequently dispatched to our area. Melrose Avenue was closed not long after and filled with emergency personnel, a mobile command post, and an endless amount of LAPD vehicles. Additional streets were closed around the area, causing gridlock conditions — at the height of rush hour.

Crisis negotiators and a SWAT team on site attempted communication with the suspect as fire department rescue personnel remained staged close by.

A woman and child who were inside the property with the suspect got out of the building safely about 7:30 p.m. At around 11 p.m. neighbors and the news media reported hearing flash bangs and some detected the smell of tear gas in the air.  It was thought that the stand off at that time was coming to a conclusion. Sirens blared again, police helicopters again circled the area intensely as they had done consistently for over 8 hours. The area was besieged with media helicopters that hovered overhead for hours up until around 12:30 a.m. Thursday. Many neighbors specifically complained about the added noise and disruption as a result of the media coverage from the air.

Officials say that the LAPD SWAT officers entered the residence about 2 a.m. Thursday and found the body of Johannes Marlie, who was 32 years of age and a resident of the city of West Hollywood, according to the coroner’s office.

Ironically, just south of the same area, a power outage occurred just after this incident started — knocking out electricity to around 2000 homes and numerous traffic signals — adding to an incredibly challenging situation for residents and police.
