Canter’s Deli Suffered Recent Closure After Health Department Inspection, Violations

Los Angeles County Department of Public Health inspectors found numerous health code violations during a recent inspection at the iconic Canter’s Deli on Fairfax Avenue. Health inspectors observed cockroaches and rodent droppings in the restaurant’s storage area and flies in the food preparation area during a routine visit on Aug. 7.

The inspection yielded 11 violations that resulted in the closure of the restaurant on Aug. 7. The popular deli remained shut down for a total of three days. During that time, county officials reinspected the deli twice before it approved it’s reopening on Aug. 10th.

Other violations included allowing “food to contact unclean equipment and using dirty utensil for scooping soup,” according to an public health official who responded to Melrose Action’s request for comment.

Also noted during the inspection, county officials said that they noticed “accumulated grease or food debris on the non food-contact surfaces of equipment, shelving, cabinets, and fryers.” One employee was also observed drinking from an open cup in the food preparation area and food that was not in good, safe and unadulterated condition, according to the LA public health department.

Overall, the health department gave Canter’s a 72.0 health score, which is equivalent to a “C.”

In a statement that was posted on ABC7’s website by the restaurant’s co-owner, Jacquelyn Canter, the eatery’s age was pointed out.

“When people ask, we are an 85-year-old restaurant and are having some growing pains as we evolve,” Canter said. “We messed up and the basement wasn’t up to our standards and we won’t let it happen again”
