Trespassing/Transient Activity On Private Property Pervasive Problem In Area

It goes without saying that if you live in the Melrose/Fairfax Village area chances are you are aware that transients trespass daily onto private property. A transient trespassing onto someones property –more chances than not — is likely to be associated with criminal activity. Many area neighbors need to treat the advice from LAPD about locking their cars as the same to checking and monitoring their property.  There are a lot of thefts reported in our area weekly. Bicycle theft being near the top. What can you do?  Keep your yards secured with locks and maintain your fences. Raise the height of your fences to 8ft if you have a lot that is 50 feet in width (City of LA). Routinely inspect your yards and keep your garages l o c k e d. Install deterrent devices like outdoor lighting/motion activated, cameras..or adopt a pet!!  Pets are a great deterrent.

Top Story: Transient Sets Fire To Vacant Home On 800 N. Poinsettia Pl

836 N. Poinsettia Pl was yet again the scene of transient related trouble after a squatter set fire to the empty property at around 9:30 p.m. on Thursday Night 3/29. LAFD responded with LAPD after neighbors saw the suspect enter the property and smoke started billowing from the home. The suspect was arrested and taken to LAPD Wilshire Station. There is an outstanding No Trespass order on this location. The suspect likely won’t spend much time in jail and could be back on our streets within hours. Ironically, LAFD was back at the property during the day on Friday to “mop up” and be certain the fire from the previous night was out. Just as LAFD arrived — transients could be seen fleeing the property yet again after re-occupying after officials left the scene the night before.

Transient Dies At Encampment On Poinsettia Place

A transient that was part of the encampment located on the 900 N. block of Poinsettia Place was found dead this morning (3/27).  LAPD was alerted by a report of a deceased person at that location and apparently was discovered inside of a tent located there. Melrose Action has learned that the person was a known area transient that had been suffering from “serious health issues”. An unidentified neighbor says people at the site say it was a drug related death.  Neighbors report seeing the L.A. county coroner come and pick up the body of the deceased person at around 11:45 a.m.  Neighbors who live in the city of West Hollywood are gathering for a neighborhood watch meeting tonight at 6:30 p.m. inside the Gateway Center (Target,Starbucks) at 7100 Santa Monica Blvd — inside the community room..Photo courtesy of Melissa B.

USPS Offers New, More Secure Way To Monitor Home Mail And Packages

Informed Delivery® by USPS®

Informed Delivery is a service from the United States Postal Service that scans the outside of your mail and shows you the images each morning before the mail is actually delivered. While the USPS first started testing the free service more than a year ago, it’s finally rolling out (almost) nationwide for residential addresses. Now it’s available in almost every major metropolitan area like here in Los Angeles.

To make sure you aren’t getting anyone else’s mail, USPS sends you a physical letter with a verification code when you sign up.While you still won’t be able to see the inside of your mail until it arrives, it should be helpful to know if an important letter is being delivered today or not.

Right now the service only provides black and white scans of regular letter-sized mail. But in the future they may add other flat-sized pieces like magazines. Subscribers get an email digest each morning with images of the first 10 pieces of mail, and a link to view the rest if they received more than 10. Find out more by clicking or tapping here www.informeddelivery.usps.com

Transients Apparently Steal Car, Ransack It, Leave it On Fuller Ave.

Neighbors on the 800 N. Block of Fuller Avenue reported seeing an abandoned car – a red Mini Cooper shown in the photo above. The car has been parked on that block for 2 weeks. It was thought it belonged to someone in the neighborhood who might have been on vacation, and that they’d eventually show up, but when no one did, and the car began accumulating parking tickets, neighbors became suspicious. Transients in the photo apparently ripped the soft top off the car, the trunk has been open and exposed to the rain.

A Neighbor who was walking by looked inside the trunk and saw a receipt with a woman’s name and phone number on it. That neighbor called the person and asked if she had a red Mini Cooper. She said she did, but someone had stolen it. She came to see it immediately parked on Fuller and both the victim and neighbors called the police. Once the police arrived, another neighbor nearby came outside of an apartment, saying not only had they seen the group of people break into the car, but that they had also seen them PULL UP IN THE CAR itself, a few minutes before they began ripping the soft top off. So not only did they vandalize the car and steal items from it, but they also stole the car. When the victim arrived, she realized that while the car was hers (the VIN# matched), the thieves had switched out her license plates, which is why when a neighbor originally reported the car’s plates to the police, it did not come up stolen. A neighbor said that “it is so disturbing that these kinds of crimes are occurring so openly and frequently in our neighborhood.”

Brutal Attack Results In Death of Transient On Santa Monica Blvd/La Brea

From the Beverly Press (www.beverlypress.com)
A 45-year-old suspect was arrested on March 13 in downtown Los Angeles and booked for the March 4 murder of a man in West Hollywood.

Lt. Joe Mendoza, with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department’s Homicide Bureau, identified the suspect as Carl Edwards, who he said is transgender and identifies as a woman. The suspect and victim were in a dating relationship and had been in an argument prior to the homicide, he said.

The suspect stabbed the victim at approximately 1:15 a.m. in the 7100 block of Santa Monica Boulevard. Witnesses called 911 and the victim was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Police identified the decedent as Bernar Arlain, 32. The victim and suspect are believed to be transients.

Mendoza said investigators identified the suspect by interviewing witnesses and examining security camera footage. Deputies with the department’s Fugitive Unit located the suspect at approximately 10:15 a.m. at a public location downtown, but Mendoza said he did not have specifics about where the arrest occurred. Edwards is facing one count of murder. He is being held without bail.
